What is it with children not wanting to brush their teeth? The answer is probably different for each unique little sprout, but what doesn’t change is the importance of good oral hygiene. Keep reading for some age-appropriate tips that’ll change their response from “ugh!” to “let’s do it!”
Encourage Your Child’s Independence
One reason your child might balk at the idea of brushing their teeth is that they’re fiercely independent. For them, being told what to do and when to do it can be frustrating. Butting heads isn’t likely to yield productive results.
You can encourage their strong willpower in a healthy way by letting them choose their dental equipment. When they get to pick out their own toothbrush and toothpaste, it adds a personalized touch to their routine, and helps them feel like they have agency.
Give Them the “Why” to Dental Care
Is your kid the type to ask “why” after nearly every explanation you give them? Then they’re probably curious by nature and like to know the importance of a task before they set out to do it.
Knowing why they need to brush their teeth can help motivate and educate them, so don’t pass up the opportunity to teach! Besides mentioning that brushing and flossing help prevent uncomfortable complications like gum disease and cavities, you can also tell them that their breath will stink if they avoid it. Ew!
Gamify Their Oral Hygiene Chores
Whenever you can turn chores into a game, do it. Remember when two minutes used to feel like 5,000 minutes? Children have shorter attention spans than adults, and their brains are literally programmed to play.
So queue up their favorite tune and turn brushing-your-teeth-time into lip-syncing-battle-time! Or if they’d find that totally embarrassing, a good ‘ol task-reward system will do, too. The possibilities are endless, so try to think of something that your one-of-a-kind kiddo finds enjoyable.
Lead By Example
Remember that children are like sponges. They’re constantly absorbing information and learning from it, and that includes you! If you moan and groan when it’s time for your dental appointment, they’ll moan and groan for theirs. If you skip the occasional brushing session or two, don’t assume your observant sprite didn’t notice. Show them that taking care of their teeth is important and fun by treating your own routine like it’s important and fun.
