What Are Implant Dentures?
Traditional dentures work by using the shape and natural suction of your mouth to stay in place. On the other hand, implant dentures remain stationary thanks to multiple strategically placed dental implants surgically inserted into the jawbone. Dental implants are normally made from titanium, which fuses to the jawbone in a process called “osseointegration,” which allows for additional stability, comfort, and longevity. There are two main types of implant dentures. During your consultation, we will determine which of the following best meets your needs.
Fixed/Permanent Implant Dentures
A fixed implant denture is made to stay in place at all times. It can only be removed by a dental professional. In most scenarios, four to six strategically placed dental implants are placed to hold permanent dentures. This is a preferred option for many patients because they act more like real teeth.
Removable Implant Dentures
Removable implant dentures, sometimes called “snap-on” dentures, are also held into place using dental implants. The difference is that they use clips or ball sockets to attach to them. This way, patients can take their dentures out as needed. This type of implant denture needs to be removed throughout the day for cleaning.
The Implant Denture Process
During your consultation, we will determine whether or not you are a good candidate for implant dentures. At this point, we can create a treatment plan that meets your needs. For some patients, preparatory procedures are necessary before getting dental implants to improve the probability of success.
The dental implants are placed into the jawbone via a surgical procedure. Then, they fuse to the surrounding bone tissue through the osseointegration process. This can take between three and six months. Next, metal connectors, called “abutments,” are placed on the ends of the implants. Your final denture is designed and crafted according to your needs and secured into place by your dentist.
