Also known as “laughing gas,” nitrous oxide is often recommended for patients with mild to moderate dental anxiety. Breathed in through a small nasal mask, it creates feelings of warmth and slight euphoria that helps slow racing thoughts and decrease any sense of physical discomfort. A few deep breaths will have a patient feeling relaxed, and once the procedure is over, the patient breathes fresh oxygen before the mask is removed. The patient will feel like themselves within minutes and can resume their day without any lingering effects.
